Professor Song Zhang
Associate Professor & SPIE Fellow

Dr. Zhang is an associate professor in mechanical engineering. He received his Ph.D. degrees from Stony Brook University in 2005. His current research focuses on developing superfast, super-resolution 3-D imaging technologies and on exploring their applications. His current research interests include 3-D machine/computer  vision, biophotonic imaging, virtual reality, augment vision, human computer interactions, forensic science, and biomedical engineering.

Tyler Bell
Ph.D. candidate (4th year)

Tyler joined the lab in 2013 after receiving his B.S. in Computer Science, summa cum laude, from Iowa State University in 2012. Later earning his M.S. in Human Computer Interaction in 2014, he is now a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Engineering. Currently, Tyler's research interests include: 3D communications/telepresence; 3D data/video compression; real-time 3D sensing systems; virtual/augmented reality; human computer interaction; and multimedia on mobile devices. Outside of the lab, Tyler spends time with his wife and daughter, plays basketball, or enjoys a video game or two.

Yatong An
Ph.D. Candidate (3rd year)

Yatong joined the lab for his Ph.D. in 2015. Before that, he received his B.S. in Control Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2013. He also received M.Phil. in Computer Science from the University of Hong Kong in 2015. He is interested in computer vision, 3D reconstruction, machine learning, robotics and control. In his leisure time, he likes hiking and badminton.

Jae-Sang Hyun
Ph.D. Candidate (3rd year)

Jae-Sang received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Yonsei University in 2015. He is in the course of Ph.D. within our group. He had project experiences in robotics, and computer vision system. His interest area is robotics, and optics. He takes the role of making an application to enhance the accuracy and the speed of 3D reconstruction and an embedded system. Jae-Sang spend his leisure time in playing basketball, making robots, and taking pictures.

Chufan Jiang
Ph.D. Candidate (3rd year)

Chufan received her B.S. in Automation Engineering from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in the fall of 2015. Now she is pursuing her PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering. She is currently working with Dr. Zhang on structured-light three-dimensional optical metrology. Her research interests include three-dimensional optical metrology, image processing and machine learning. Chufan enjoys cooking and listening to music in her leisure time.

Ziping Liu
Ph.D. Student (1st year)

Ziping Liu received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2017. He joined the lab in 2016 as a junior student and started to pursue his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2017. He has research experience in enhancing the performance of 3D imaging and developing new computational imaging technology. He is interested in image processing, 3D imaging, and computational imaging. In his leisure time, he enjoys reading, playing badminton and swimming.

Michael Crawford
Ph.D. Student (1st year)

Michael Crawford received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 2017. Now, he is pursuing his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has past research experience in metallurgy, corrosion, and heat transfer for HVAC applications, diesel engine fuel efficiency and emissions reduction, and pedagogy for ME 274 (dynamics) especially in studying the role of video examples. He is interested in addressing the sensing technology bottleneck in robotics. In his leisure time, he enjoys basketball, tutoring, and participating in robotics competitions such as NASA RMC.

Undergraduate Student (Senior)

Michael is a senior in Mechanical Engineering who is currently enrolled in a combined B.S./M.S. program. He joined the lab in 2018 to research in his interest areas including optics, robotics, and controls. Outside the lab, he enjoys playing basketball, watching sports, and spending time with friends from his church.

Peter Zibley
Undergraduate Student (Senior)

Peter Zibley is a senior in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. He joined the lab during his senior year. His research interests include 3D imaging and system optimization, systems and controls, and medical devices. During his free time, Peter enjoys reading, playing golf and practicing yoga.

Xia Chen
Undergraduate Student (Senior)

Xia is a '2+2' exchange student from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He joined the lab in his first year at Purdue University as a Junior student majoring Mechanical Engineering. He participated in SURF program in summer 2017, and currently he is working with Prof. Zhang on 3D data compression. He is interested in 3D imaging and digital image processing. Outside of the lab, he is a movie fan and enjoys travelling to different places.

Beatrice Lim
